What is Decentralized Finance (DeFi)?

Decentralized Finance (DeFi) is a rapidly evolving financial ecosystem that enables users to borrow, lend, invest and transact without relying on traditional banks. Instead of centralized intermediaries, DeFi operates through smart contracts—automated programs on blockchains like Ethereum.

These systems allow for peer-to-peer financial interactions and facilitate global access to financial tools; all that’s needed is a crypto wallet and Internet connection. Users maintain control of their funds, and transactions are recorded transparently on the blockchain.

DeFi introduces greater financial flexibility and innovation but comes with added risks, including smart contract bugs, volatility and regulatory uncertainty. As a result, users must carefully weigh ease of access and returns against potential security vulnerabilities.
